What does Hot Shoe and Cold Shoe mean?


Hot Shoe: Some people also call the dovetail slot. Broadly speaking, hotshoes are a fixed interface slot for connecting various digital imaging equipment (including digital SLR, DV and traditional digital cameras) to various external accessories. The connectable accessories include flash, GPS locator, video light and Microphone and more.

The slot is provided with a power connector that provides normal operation of these temporary external devices, and an interface for audio signal input. Most of these interfaces are designed to be hidden in the slot, and some have a hot shoe cover and two hot shoe surfaces. Parallel metal grooves for tightening the fastening bolts of these external devices.

But for a typical digital SLR, its main purpose is to connect and fix the external flash. It is known that digital SLR's built-in flash has a low flash index and is not flexible enough to use. Some digital cameras do not even have their own flash.

This requires the use of hot shoes to connect the flash.

Cold Shoe: Cold Shoe and Hot Shoe, both relative to the flash. Cold has the meaning of non-conductivity, and hot means conductive.

Cold Shoe is capable of inserting the light pins without information exchange and signal transmission. Some plastic bases such as the flash are the Cold Shoe.
